Mawaru Penguindrum (輪るピングドラム):
a 24-episode show that started airing in July 2011, produced by Brain's Base (the creators of Baccano! and Durarara!!). It is notably directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara, who, besides directing parts of Sailor Moon, created and directed the 1997 classic Revolutionary Girl Utena.
Ok, so what's it about?
Uh, I'll let Ikuhara describe it to you...
"It didn't take more concrete shape until fairly recently. It's hard to tell people when they ask what kind of show it is. When they ask, I just answer, 'Well, penguins are in it,' and they just pout at me like, 'What? That answer again?' But I can't explain it."
Er, Wikpedia has a more sensical answer:
"A terminally ill girl named Himari Takakura is miraculously saved from death by a strange spirit who resides in a penguin-shaped hat. However, in exchange for extending her life, the spirit tasks Himari's brothers, Kanba and Shoma, to seek out an item known as the Penguin Drum with assistance from a trio of strange penguins."
"So watch this anime if you haven't already, you lowlifes who will never amount to anything."
